In last week’s newsletter, I said that in this one, I’d be sharing an exciting new project I’m working on. But as soon as I hit ‘send’ I thought ‘working’ on?!?!? Ha! Who are you kidding, Missy? You won’t be ‘working’ on this exciting new project at all. Nope! Stevie the lovely local builder will be doing all the ‘working’ that needs to be done. I’ll simply be looking on from the sidelines. Or handing out encouraging comments and regular cups of exceptionally sweet tea (what is it with builders and sugar?)―whilst Stevie and his team create an amazing new studio for me in the garden. There’s an old shed there already. Gorgeous pale blue weathered wood. But ‘old’ and ‘weathered’ don’t always happily coexist with ‘watertight’ and ‘wind-proof’, at least not in Scotland! Once we’d established it needs a new roof, it needs a new floor, the walls have seen better days (They’re so full of holes you could spit peas through them!) and that when insulated there’d be very little floor space left―we all agreed that it’d be best if we started from scratch. There’s that ‘we’ again! I seem to have an issue with having a studio built―no matter how modest in size. So much so that I appear to feel the need to convince myself (and you!) that I’m somehow involved in the building process, in the hope that that makes it less self-indulgent. I don’t know what my problem is. Why would I struggle so much with the idea of having my own studio to practice my art in? Anyway, I hummed ‘n’ hawed for a while before I decided to file this under ‘self-care’ rather than ‘self-indulgence’ and make the no-turning-back-phone-call to Stevie. As soon as the conversation ended any residual discomfort was quickly washed away by a wave of excitement. Yes, I am ridiculously excited and I can’t wait for the build to begin! Ooh! Check me with my Grand Designs* lingo! Hopefully, the build won’t come with any of the other Grand Designs cliches or it’s only a matter of time before we’re living in a caravan on-site with another baby on the way …! And that really would be a project!
