Done anything scary recently? Or maybe scary’s too strong a word. Let’s say ‘slightly out of your comfort zone’ which is more realistic and a good place to be. As my good friend* David Bowie once said, exciting things happen when we go just a little bit out of our comfort zone. If you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.
*I walked past him in the basement of Wembly Stadium in 1992. Yes, he didn’t look in my direction, and no, not a word was spoken between us, but I could feel we had a connection (yeah, right!) and have been referring to him as ‘my good friend David Bowie’ ever since. In truth, he’s a hero of mine and I still get a thrill at the thought that my path crossed with his. He was about to go on stage and was wearing the palest teal blue suit. So the scary, sorry I mean ‘slightly out of my comfort zone’, thing that I did this week was to announce to the world (in the smallest of ways) that I’m writing a B O O K. I snuck it in at the end of a blog post in the hope that no one would really notice. But of course, the part of me that loves books and wants to write one is the same part that loves to make art and will happily share it with the world, so she came over all ‘come on let’s do this!’ and hit the ‘post’ button. And I just went along with it. Now she’s about to drag me another couple of yards out from the shallows and hit ‘send’ on this. I know I’m being flippant, but my good friend David Bowie was right. There is something exciting about being out here, away from the shore, madly treading water as I wonder if I can pull this book-writing malarky off! Only time, and a huge number of hours at a keyboard, will tell - so watch this space!
